What is Happening?

The Generation Park land development team is currently undertaking a project to restore a drainage channel to its original capacity. This work includes the excavation of 46,000 cubic yards of channel slopes to their initial grade, as well as the repair or replacement of over 2,000 linear feet of outfall pipes, ranging from 24 to 42 inches in diameter. This site is sits between Redemption Square and West Lake Village.

Why does this need to be done?

Over time, sediment accumulates along the bottom of the drainage channel, reducing its depth and limiting its drainage capacity. In the past, the Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD) managed the maintenance of this channel, but in 2022, ownership of the channel was transferred to the Generation Park Management District (GPMD).

Under this transfer agreement, HCFCD committed to funding a $1 million restoration project, with GPMD overseeing the work according to construction plans agreed upon by both parties.

How Long will Construction Take?

The contractor assigned to the project is PLD Construction. The channel restoration effort is anticipated to last several weeks, with a completion date set for November 1st. Once completed, the project will restore the channel’s full drainage capacity, enhancing water flow and reducing the risk of flooding in surrounding areas. This upgrade will ensure more efficient stormwater management for nearby communities and support long-term resilience in the area.
